I remember reading a John Adams biography many years ago and being impressed by the idea that he liked to take long walks, sometimes as long as 10 miles, to think, talk, and clear his mind. I have found the respite of long walks helpful psychologically in Peru as I work through the stress of cross-cultural living and of caring for sick patients. I will listen to sermons or classical music as I view the creation. But when I hit a hard stretch of uphill I need rock music or pop to hide my heavy breathing.
